Antique Picture Frames

This has changed over the past few decades because of the dramatic advances in digital imaging technologies and computer power. One of the best examples of this was the computer artistry of Ray Downing, whose digital re-creation of Jesus based on the Shroud was documented in “The Real Face of Jesus” program that appeared on the History Channel. In the past few years, digital artists around the world have been able to render their own interpretations of how Jesus may have appeared based on the Shroud and these show up from time to time on the internet. However, throughout all those years, not one artist has attempted to create an interpretation of what Mary, Mother of Jesus looked like based on the Shroud image. Until now, that is. Look for a duplicate detail nearby; for instance, if a chunk is missing along the bottom near the left corner, find a repeat of the pattern near the right corner.

Dust a little cornstarch over the intact area that matches the damaged spot using an artist’s brush. When the compound is soft, press it over the area you wish to re-create; this area should be covered in cornstarch. Press firmly to get an accurate impression of all details, including the edges.

This lug design was beautifully balanced and very kind to the eye most times — this is undoubtedly one of the really nice ones. Reynolds double butted Most pre-war Hetchins frames can be clearly identified as the dealer records show what the model was.

Printed mount notations such as photographer’s identification and title are fairly reliable, but can still provide false information. Dating by mount type and style provides a rough indicator for identifying images. The caveat is that many photographers, particularly in more remote areas, failed to keep up to photographic fashion and used old mounts until their stocks were exhausted. Also, photographers reprinted historically or commercially important images long after they were originally taken.

Also negatives were often sold or copied and the mount information may not accurately reflect the history of the images. Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.

The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps. Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand.
